Atelier Picasso
BASTIAN is pleased to present Atelier Picasso open from 3 September at the London gallery. The exhibition will reimagine Picasso’s Cannes Studio as an immersive experience within the gallery, using a treasure trove of objects including furniture, sculptures, ceramics, drawings and prints. After escaping wartime Paris the beauty and light of the Côte d’Azur reinvigorated Picasso. He was a prolific image-maker throughout his life, but the joie de vivre that he found in rural Provence sparked his creativity. This installation will bring to life the huge variety of Picasso’s oeuvre, with a focus on ceramics and works on paper.
A rare complete set of Picasso’s Visage Plate series will sit alongside posters designed by the artist to accompany and promote his famous exhibitions of ceramics in Vallauris. In turn images of Picasso at work and relaxing in the South of France captured by André Villers adorn the walls beside Faune dévoilant une dormeuse and Minotaure caressant une dormeuse from the Vollard suite. Two beautiful ink drawings, Deux nus et têtes d’hommes and Le Voyeur, trace the path of Picasso’s creativity from the 1930s through to the 1970s. The works are placed on and around furniture familiar to the rooms of the artist’s atelier in Villa la Californie, a place of quiet simplicity and elegant grandeur.
You do not need to make an appointment to visit Atelier Picasso.
